Marvellous May Meeting, Wednesday Workshop, by Cheerful Thomas Chen, On Networking, and A Speech On Chess

Siva, Area S5 director, attended our BHA meeting again. We were delighted to hear he will be the Director of Division S from July 1st.

At the meeting in his self-introduction he told us about Vesak .Vesak means star in Sanskrit. The festival is widely celebrated in India and elsewhere as the day or month of Buddha's enlightenment.

Siva is the incoming Area S director. So I hope he will install the new committee on Wednesday July 1st..

English Language
My word of the day was pragmatic, an adjective, an attitude, not quite the same as practical, more being . The word pragmatic ws used by Toastmaster of the Day, Yudy, who had seen the slide I sent earlier in the day, which he displayed, and later used by senior speaker Pallavi.

Pallavi gave a speech on accepting an award for winning three speech contests, praising all her helpers including Eric Tan who told her to go on stage in advance and check her micrphone sound before she started.

Sarthak Goel gave a speech on the history and invention of chess.

Apologies from Faith (doing a law degree at Harvard) who had prepared the agenda and sent it out widely, to whatsapp groups. Thanks Faith for the help with booking Thomas Chen and sending out the agenda.

Our GE suggested that the word of the day should be displayed prominently, pershaps in whatsApp and the Chatbox on our screens, to encourage use and for ready reference.

I later remembered that on previous occasions I had asked people to have pens and paper ready, and to write down the word of the day. I had also gone around the audience asking each person to use the word of the day in a sentence, suggesting a senetence to fit their role in the meeting, correction any misuse or mispronunciation, remind speakers and evaluators to slip the word into their opening sentence.
