Mentoring Mike Ma - our new secretary. He learns Pathways and How To Give A First Speech

Image
Mike Ma is our new secretary at Braddell Heights Advanced and helped me claim another Competent Leader award which gains a point for our club. Our current secretary was Kan Kin Fung, who held two committee posts. He emailed us to say that he will not be joining us online during Covid-19. We need more help because only a committee member can register our completion of manuals or levels in Pathways. Completion of levels gets points for your club. Points go toward your being a distinguished club and having a ribbon for your banner. Braddell Heights has been a distinguished club for years. We wish to retain that status. It's like a certificate. It shows that you have helped members to complete the Toastmasters course. How To Give Your First Speech Mike's first language is Mandarin and I am keen for him to start Pathways, to reach level one, which will involve him in giving a speech, receiving feedback and using the feedback to giving the same speech again or to give another...

20th May 2020 meeting Wednesday - Personality Typing and Promoting Braddell Heights Advanced

Image
I spoke about Personality typing using Myers Briggs system. Our numbers are gradually growing. Prepared Speeches Pallavi spoke about conquering fear. Abbirami spoke about the Indian lady who protested that the company did not employ women. She was given a job in the company, later married an employee and went off to found a major company. Table Topics - Topics For Impromptu Speeches "If you never made a mistake, you never learn." Yudy talked about practising a piece of music on the piano. When it rains look for rainbows, when it's dark look for stars. Nature gives us so much hope in a crisis, so we should look for light and hope. "Can you lie without saying a word?" Angela said: - at school  children and dogs asked if they ate the chocolate and shake their heads or say nothing, but the chocolate around their mouths reveals the ate the chocolate. Chooi Ling was our timer. You can watch video recordings of the meetings a on learncool.sg - Braddel...

How to Share screen fast in Learncool (or Zoom)

Image
When you want to share your screen, whether you are on zoom or learncool the system is pretty similar. First you look for the share screen button, usually in another colour such as green. Click on it. Up comes a picture of all the open items you might want to share. If you have your slide show (Powerpoint) click on that.   You can prepare in advance with only your slides open so that you don't have to hunt for them. (Shut down facebook and mail and whatsapp or minimise them and/or pin them so you can reopen them fast if you like. If you sit with your screen ready to share there is less delay and you get less flustered and look more efficient. Here is exactly what you do when your name is called or you are being introduced. Move your mouse upwards to show the symbols along the bottom of the screen. On the far left corner below is a square symbol with an arrow in it.  Hover over the symbol and up pops the wording share screen. Then click on your picture which you want t...

Image
Welcome to new member Mike Ma. Mike is from China, now living in Singapore with family, and has attended several of the meetings of Braddell Heights Advanced Club, keen to improve his English. UK Clubs - what they taught me, Harrovians and HOD - by Angela Lansbury

Image
HARROVIANS Harrovian means belonging to Harrow. Harrow is in north West London towards Heathrow airport and attracts many residents of different nationalities, languages and religions and diets. We invited the mayor to our contests to present the prizes. Many members were students, singles, looking for work, between jobs, new to London, on a budget. Our summer and Christmas parties were held at our premises and were potluck. The venue changed, from a pub which closed down, to another pub which closed, a church hall, and a church in Harrow. HOD I was often meeter and greeter. We had a welcome desk. The founder members were entrepreneurs, efficient and affluent. We held the Christmas party in a restaurant. We had a summer BBQ in the garden of a members' house. TIME The UK is 7 hours behind Singapore. So it is hard for a Singaporean resident to watch a meeting or join in unless willing to stay up all night. the 7-9 pm meetings in London are starting at midn...

Marvellous May Meeting, Wednesday Workshop, by Cheerful Thomas Chen, On Networking, and A Speech On Chess

Image
Siva, Area S5 director, attended our BHA meeting again. We were delighted to hear he will be the Director of Division S from July 1st. At the meeting in his self-introduction he told us about Vesak .Vesak means star in Sanskrit. The festival is widely celebrated in India and elsewhere as the day or month of Buddha's enlightenment. Siva is the incoming Area S director. So I hope he will install the new committee on Wednesday July 1st.. English Language My word of the day was pragmatic, an adjective, an attitude, not quite the same as practical, more being . The word pragmatic ws used by Toastmaster of the Day, Yudy, who had seen the slide I sent earlier in the day, which he displayed, and later used by senior speaker Pallavi. Pallavi gave a speech on accepting an award for winning three speech contests, praising all her helpers including Eric Tan who told her to go on stage in advance and check her micrphone sound before she started. Sarthak Goel gave a speech on the ...

Zoom and Other Web conferencing Systems to Try and Learn: GoogleMeet, Microsoft Teams, Skype and more!

Image
I have used Zoom, Skype and Learncool.sg Skype Skype is handy for one to one calls. Less complicated.  Zoom Zoom is good for huge conferences, with holding rooms for people whose identity you wish to check. Learncool learncool, started by somebody in Toastmasters International, has the developers on hand to help you out so it suits me. You can create an agenda within the website and store your videos of meetings on a wall, a bit like Facebook.  Google Hangouts Google hangouts is what I need to learn next because other people know it and it sounds friendly to novices who already know google and gmail.  Software clients With video and VoIP BlackBerry : BBM Meetings Blue Jeans Network : cloud-based videoconferencing service Cisco :  WebEx Cisco :  Jabber XCP FaceTime Glance Networks Google Duo GoToMeeting : HD Faces Highfive InterCall Librestream : Onsight Expert Collaboration Software LifeSize : Desktop LoopUp Microsof...

What You Need to Know And Learn About Logging into And Using learncool - Follow up on April 30th

Image
After our Braddell Heights Advanced meeting online using learncool.sg , I spoke with the developers' expert Yudy to solidify my knowledge of how all the symbols and actions worked. Thurs 30 April FAQ - 1 Start with how to login. Q  Do I need a password? In zoom, yes. But in some recurring meetings you can enter your email, join with facebook, automatically log in. Often you then need to wait for the host to admit you and a sign will say so. If you can't log in, maybe you have two zoom windows open, one still open from a previous meeting. Shut them both and log in again. 2 Is my information secure on this site? 3 Does it matter if I am on a phone instead of a laptop? 4 I have logged in but nothing is happening. This is security, for zoom and everywhere. to prevent strangers joining in, the host has to admit you first and they may be busy advising somebody who is already in the meeting room. 5 How to join the meeting? A In learncool.sg join by clicking on conf...

Awesome April Meetings - 29 April HPL project speech on Online meeting

Image
Braddell Heights Advanced at Learncool.sg , meeting 29 April 2020. Yudy and I were busy all day updating the meeting programme.  Additions included Norman as timer, Shona as quiz master. I always have new idea. this time I had identified International Dance day and made the theme movement and the WORKSHOP sell yourself. I was doing a lot, my HPL project, the opening speech, the table topics and workshop (which I combined as we had done in previous workshops at online meetings, too), and Language Evaluation. During the day Faith dropped out. Timing & Rehearsal We logged in, in advance, 15 minutes early, which was earlier than last time. But it was not enough extra time as we were still kfaffling around at 7.15. I had printed out the program sheet which Yudy had reduced to one page using a toastmasters template he had discovered. Norman Walford was timer and he is a workaholic and wanted to end the meeting as scheduled so no time for feedback from everyone. Only ju...
