Pathways and Toastmasters - problems and solutions

Image
The problem is the language. Toastmasters tells us to use easily understood language, but uses words which nobody who I know uses in everyday life. I never talk about a pathway in education, only a course. I don't talk about electives. I talk about options. Unless I am climbing Everest, which I have never done, I don't use the word basecamp. On a website I might use the word first page, home page, or page one. I never use the word transcript. I might use the word homework, or task, or written work. I could not use all these technical terms in my secondary languages of French or Spanish or German. So it seems challenging to expect these words to make sense to all my club members whose first language is Chinese, Cantonese, Tamil, Japanese and Vietnamese. Large numbers of people cannot cope with everyday words such as there and their, and using the verb to be, and the past tense. Is it realistic to expect them to cope with the combined challenges of a computer system, on top o...

Newcomers who are nervous about speaking like to start as an ah counter. Be the Ah Counter Who likes this role? Newcomers who are nervous about speaking like to be an ah counter.

Promoting Your Club In The Media: Facebook and more

Image
Facebook - Boosting by Liking On Facebook you want likes to look more popular and to boost Facebook's own mechanical push of popular posts. When you post, ask members to like the page. This keeps them involved, as well as boosting the page. Instead of sending the photos via WhatsApp, send to your whatsApp group the link to the Facebook page and ask the members to like the photo and like the Facebook page. Facebook Boosting By Paying I thought that if your club is small you might get marketing help from your area budget. Now it seems that it's the other way around. If the area has no budget, if your club is larger and has more funds you could use them to boost your club on Facebook. You could boost for a week, and that way reach out to non Toastmasters. You can pay once off for a week to get signups for Speechcraft. You might want to do this well in advance. Also allow time to creat good websites and material to send in reply such as a sign up form. Regular Postings You can ask ...
