The Chinese sign is a Chinese glyph for script or literature in Chinese. The design is by AEtoms ( Ætoms ) in Wikipedia. INTRODUCTION Why did you learn your first language?  You wanted to communicate with parents, grandparents or carers who gave you food and drink, or a toilet. You wanted to share jokes, share disappointments, share hopes about food and gifts. Point of view. (I was born late in life.) Baby swallows fly. Subject verb object. Secrets And Inspiration From An International Speech Finalist

Image
A Chinese girl won the world finalists, alongisde two other female speakers. She wanted to win the International Speech contest. Her first problem was to learn to speak English. She watched one of her favourite shows, Friends, from the USA. She watched it with the Chinese subtitles to find out what was being said. She played it over and over again, an hour every day. She repeated every word, phrase and sentence, said by every character. At the end of the year she could repeat everything without hesitation.  She then started reading newspapers for an hour every day. She joined an English speaking Toastmasters club. She took English lessons. She wrote her speeches. And re-wrote them. For her final speech, she spent three hours every morning re-writing. She would read the speech aloud. And time it. The first hour she dealt with content. Drama. Emotion. The second hour she dealt with vocabulary and enhancement, simplification, alliteration.  The third hour she spent on perfo...

How to Log in onto the agenda in Toastmost

Toastmost has adapted a Wordpress site for toastmasters.  " Toastmost.org club websites are free for six months, which should be enough time to figure out if the software makes sense for your club. If you are achieving your goals with your club website and decide to keep it, an annual subscription is $50 USD for the basic membership." If you pay an extra subscription, they will spend time adapting the basic site to add features you want. The agenda is usually for members only Login to Toastmost (under your club name) Click on calendar Choose the date Singapore Online meets every Friday evening, including Xmas Day. 9 pm until 11.30 pm. Why so late? Why not 7 pm like other clubs? because 1 THE USA The club is attended by members and visitors from around the world. Including Australia which is 3 hours later. The USA is just getting up. Any earlier would be too early for them. For the UK it is an ideal time if you are not working, 11 am in winter. 2 CONFLICTING EVENTS Some member...

Why Evaluate? Why be evaluated? How to find the evaluation form and send it to your speaker (and load up your evaluation resources - Previously into Pathways)

Image
Evaluation is your third part of project 2 in level 1. You need to do this if you want to enter the evaluation contest. Many Toastmasters meetings are short of evaluators. Form a pair with somebody from your club. Go to other meetings as a pair and evaluate each other's speeches. To find your evaluation form> https://www.toastmasters.org/Resources/Resource-Library?t=effective%20evaluation Allow time to search. If you have time, download all the form for the path you are on. Print out all of them, or at least the next one. I print out two. I keep one blank to send to anybody the first or second time I do this project or to send to myself and the evaluator.  I fill one out as the evaluator does the spoken evaluation. Then I can immediately correct my speech (for example if the evaluator suggests, look for a quotation to start, I can do so straight away. this is extra important if you plan to re-use your speech outside toastmasters or in a contest. Also I sometimes cannot rea...

How to find evaluation forms

Image
If you were a member of your club's committee in 2019-2020 you were entitled to a copy of the District 80 directory. This book has two useful sets of information. The second half has the committee members of each district (district 80 is Singapore), grouped.  PATHWAYS PROJECT list The front of the book has the list of pathways projects, grouped by the Pathways. I use this to record the paths I have completed. I list the numbers of the evaluation forms. Resources You can go into the Toastmasters International website, log in, and click on the Resources section. The evaluation forms are in alphabetic order. You also need to know the name of the project. If your project is early in the alphabet it is quicker to locate. If you have the time and patience, you could just open them all one by one until you find it. You might want to up load onto your printer into a file which you name Toastmasters Evaluations. Or you might want to print off all the evaluation form for your Pathway....
