Mentoring Mike Ma - our new secretary. He learns Pathways and How To Give A First Speech
Mike Ma is our new secretary at Braddell Heights Advanced and helped me claim another Competent Leader award which gains a point for our club.
Our current secretary was Kan Kin Fung, who held two committee posts. He emailed us to say that he will not be joining us online during Covid-19.
We need more help because only a committee member can register our completion of manuals or levels in Pathways. Completion of levels gets points for your club. Points go toward your being a distinguished club and having a ribbon for your banner. Braddell Heights has been a distinguished club for years. We wish to retain that status. It's like a certificate. It shows that you have helped members to complete the Toastmasters course.
How To Give Your First Speech
Mike's first language is Mandarin and I am keen for him to start Pathways, to reach level one, which will involve him in giving a speech, receiving feedback and using the feedback to giving the same speech again or to give another speech.
Mike is my mentee and so it's my duty and pleasure to encourage him.
Tips on Giving a First Speech
1 Length
He asked, 'How long is the first speech?'
I told him, 'Only four to six minutes.'
He sounded daunted, 'So long!'
I assured him, 'You have already given a table topics impromptu speech for two minutes. The first speech is only four minutes, minimum. That is the length of two table topics.
'If you talk about your past for two minutes, then your future for two minutes, that's a four minute speech.
'You came from China to Singapore. If you talk about China, the country, the language, the city, that's a two minute speech.
'If you talk about Singapore, the language, your daughter's school, where you live, that's a two minute speech.'

From Shirley Tham who is a member of a Chinese (Mandarin speaking) club, I was sent a document which translates common Toastmasters International terms from written Chinese characters into Pinyin (Chinese in the roman alphabet) and to the English language translation.
