Secrets And Inspiration From An International Speech Finalist
A Chinese girl won the world finalists, alongisde two other female speakers.
She wanted to win the International Speech contest.
Her first problem was to learn to speak English.
She watched one of her favourite shows, Friends, from the USA. She watched it with the Chinese subtitles to find out what was being said. She played it over and over again, an hour every day. She repeated every word, phrase and sentence, said by every character. At the end of the year she could repeat everything without hesitation.
She then started reading newspapers for an hour every day. She joined an English speaking Toastmasters club. She took English lessons.
She wrote her speeches. And re-wrote them. For her final speech, she spent three hours every morning re-writing. She would read the speech aloud. And time it. The first hour she dealt with content. Drama. Emotion.
The second hour she dealt with vocabulary and enhancement, simplification, alliteration.
The third hour she spent on performance: facial expressions. Gestures. She practised giving the speech standing up. She was prepared for any venue. She pracrised speking on the spot, within five pace, and walking onto a huge stage.
