Evaluation by Lim Tong Lee at BHA Jan 2021: Workshop called The Art & Science of Evaluation

On Saturday Jan 16 Braddell Heights held its usual meeting on the third Saturday of the month and Lim Tong Lee, who has achieved the title of Distinguished Toastmasters twice, gave us a valuable workshop on evaluation.

Where do you write your evaluations?

I used to be 'environmentally friendly' as he generously commented, by writing on the back of the meeting program sheet which had the speaker's name. However, my writing often would not fit on one page, ran up the margins, and got muddled. So I started downloading a spare copy of the evaluation form, one filled in by hand hurriedly, the other written neatly in block capitals for the person I was evaluating.

Lim Tong Lee reminded us of all the challenges. When you are listening, how do you take notes without missing the next part?

Lim Tong Lee says don't write full sentences. Note key words.

But I can type quickly.

You can type into notes on Learncool and copy and paste into another document. Read it off the screen.

What - vocal variety

Tick the boxes on page 2 of the Toastmasters International evaluation sheets. keep 2nd page printed off.

Lim Tong Lee says: leave spaces between writing.

I write in capitals to be clearer.

He suggests, You can create a three columns. what, how and why.

Alternatively, do mind mapping.

Write only main ideas.

Have a symbol system.

Symbol For Important

For important points, in the margin write the Capital letter I for important; circled. Capital letter S, encircled, important dollar sign or asterisk.

Time management skills.

In a contest you have 5 minutes with notes.

Don't rewrite notes. print an evaluation form.

Review, revise and rehearse.

number the speaker's strengths and prioritise.

numbering strengths and prioritise. green is too late for going to suggest and conclude. Transition at 1 minute and 40 seconds so you don't go over time.

In an online contest, unlike? In a physical contest, a timing device it is not allowed as you would get an unfair advantage. So practise in advanced. Time yourself on your own handphone

Art is subjective.

You could be an enthusiastic, encouraging Motivator like Tony Robbins.

You could be an Analyst who analyses like Elon Must.

You could be an attention getting flamboyant Performer like Michael Jackson

You can show your Faith, your passion. You can have a style which is your preferred and usual, and also practise what you aspire to.

We had a wonderful meeting. My speech was on blogging. My evaluator said I should use wider margins and more white space.

Valuable feedback.

Next meetings are the third Saturday afternoon every month, starting at 2 pm, Singapore time. All welcome, toastmasters and guests. And the first Wednesday evening starting at 7 pm .Our club has room for a committee member. Do join us to see a meeting and seriously consider being a member or dual member. I belong to four club and have made new friends at every club. Being on the committee gives you extra reason to contact committee members, and members, and approach or follow up enquiries from strangers who are curious or keen.
