Acting and being an author - a brilliant meeting at Braddell Heights Advanced

Nazrin Khairunan, film director.

Acting for non actors was the topic of our workshop preview speaker. Writing a speech and acting it out are two aspects of successful speech writing.

Acting

A brilliant meeting at Braddell Heights Advanced Toastmasters (speakers' training) club, culminating in a preview of the workshop on acting for non-actors, by film director and polytechnic lecturer Nazrin Khairunan. President Yenny has booked him to do the workshop on Wednesday September 1st, training our keen speakers before the club's speech contest in October, when the top speakers will then go forward to the Area Contest.

I asked, "How do you act (or re-enact) feeling suicidal, convincingly, without ending up feeling suicidal?"

Nazrin laughed. He quoted Alec Guinness who said, 'Acting is pretending'.

Yenny said, "I have seen a clip of the director telling an actor to cry, which he did, then shouting 'cut', and the actor stopped crying. And the director shouted, 'Cry,' and the actor cried."

Maybe the film director should work for the Samaritans..

I won best speaker ribbon jointly for my speech entitled, I am a writer - like you. I described how I secretly wrote my relative Pearl's life story for her (90th) birthday, by asking her questions about her life every week over dinner.

The other winner was Danish who gave an insightful speech about how managing an event for a whole school Scouts group was good preparation for managing large events for adults. (A bad weather alternative plan is always useful.)

I jointly won best evaluator for my evaluation of Danish's speech. I suggested changing the title to hint what the audience would gain, perhaps in the form of a question so they have to listen to learn the answer. The other best evaluator was Raju.

The best table topics winner was our VIP visitor Jackson Chua. One table topics speaker praised the potential alternative to fireworks for National Day displays worldwide being displays by drones, which will create less noise pollution. Singapore's National Day is August 9th. India and Malaysia also have national days soon. India celebrates on August 15th and Malaysia on August 31st.

Come to BHA's meetings which are twice a month, the first Wednesday evening on Zoom from 7 pm to 9.30 and the third Saturday afternoon 2 pm to 4pm Singapore time. If you miss it, login to see if a couple of us are still around for the after-event chitchat.

The next meeting is Saturday August 21st with Lim Tong Lee's workshop, back by popular request for part two of what a committed committee can do to develop members and attract visitors. Mark these dates in your diary.
